How to plan YouTube Community posts
What YouTube Community posts do, which of the three formats works for what, and a cadence that keeps the tab useful instead of noisy.
The one surface that does not need an upload
The Community tab is the only place on YouTube where you can publish without making a video. That makes it useful and easy to abuse at the same time. A text post, an image, or a poll can keep a channel present between uploads, or it can turn the tab into a feed nobody asked for.
The difference is planning. Posting to Community when you feel like it produces noise. Posting with a reason and a cadence produces a channel that stays in front of its audience between videos.
What each format is good at
Text. The default. Best for a short update, a question, or a note that does not need a visual. Text posts work when they ask something specific rather than broadcasting.
Image. Best for a still from the next video, a behind-the-scenes frame, or a graphic that stands on its own. An image post with no context is a scroll-past.
Poll. The highest-engagement format and the easiest to overuse. A poll works when the result changes something: which video to make next, which thumbnail to use, which topic to cover. A poll with no consequence trains people to stop voting.
A cadence that does not fatigue
The mistake is treating the Community tab like a social feed and posting daily. It is a smaller surface than it looks, and the same people see every post. A cadence that respects that is closer to one or two posts a week, tied to what is actually happening on the channel.
A simple structure that holds up:
- Before an upload. A short post that names what the next video is about, so the audience has a reason to look for it.
- After an upload. A follow-up that answers a question the comments raised, which turns the video into a conversation instead of a one-off.
- Between uploads. One poll or behind-the-scenes post, only when there is a real decision to make or something worth showing.
Plan the post, publish it yourself
YouTube exposes no API for Community posts, which is worth knowing before you shop for a tool. Nothing can publish a Community post for you. What a tool can do is hold the draft, the format, and a reminder time so the post is ready when the moment comes.
That is the honest limit, and it is a small one. The planning is the part that is easy to forget, and the posting itself takes a minute.
What not to post
- Nothing that duplicates the video's own description.
- No engagement bait ("like if you agree") that asks for a reaction instead of offering one.
- No links to funnels or products as the main event. The tab is for the audience, not the funnel.
The scheduling guide covers planning the uploads themselves, and the reply guide covers what to do with the comments a post or video brings in.
